If you’ve ever held one of our 3D printed wiggle toys and wondered, “How does this tiny creature move straight out of the printer?”, you’re not alone. Flexi toys — also known as articulated or wiggle toys — are a fascinating blend of art, design, and engineering.
At KYNS3D, every single flexi toy starts as an idea and ends as a wiggly, flexible, fun companion. Let’s take you behind the scenes to see exactly how your favorite mini toys are made.
Step 1: From Imagination to 3D Design
Every creation begins with imagination. Sometimes it’s inspired by nature — like a dragon’s scales, a fish’s movement, or a cat’s stretch. Other times, it starts as a doodle or concept sketch.
Once we have the idea, we bring it to life digitally using 3D design software such as Blender or Fusion 360.
Here’s what happens during this stage:
- The toy’s shape and personality are sculpted in 3D.
- The articulated joints are carefully planned to move smoothly.
- Each hinge or segment is measured to ensure it’s strong yet flexible.
This is where creativity meets precision — designing a toy that looks adorable and moves perfectly once printed.
Step 2: Preparing for 3D Printing
Once the design is complete, it’s time to prepare it for printing. This means converting the digital model into a .STL or .3MF file and importing it into special 3D printing software (called a slicer).
At KYNS3D, we use Bambu Lab printers — some of the most advanced machines in the world — paired with AMS (Automatic Material System) technology. This allows us to print in multiple colors at once, creating vibrant and detailed toys without hand-painting.
The slicer software then:
- Slices the model into hundreds of thin layers.
- Calculates how much filament each layer needs.
- Tells the printer exactly how to build the toy — layer by layer — in 3D space.
Step 3: Printing – The Magic in Motion
Now the fun begins!
The 3D printer heats PLA+ filament (a biodegradable, plant-based plastic) to around 200°C and carefully lays it down layer by layer.
Each flexi toy can take 1 to 4 hours to print, depending on its size and detail. Because it’s printed in one continuous piece, the toy’s joints are created with tiny built-in gaps that allow them to move right off the print bed — no assembly needed!
As the print finishes, we check every surface for clean lines and strong hinges. Watching a brand-new toy lift from the plate and start wiggling is always a magical moment.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
After printing, each toy goes through a quick finishing process:
- Any small support strands or threads are removed.
- We test every hinge to make sure it wiggles smoothly.
- Each piece is gently cleaned and inspected for surface quality.
We’re proud of our attention to detail — every toy that leaves our studio has passed our hands-on quality check.
Step 5: Color, Character & Packaging
Our toys come in a wide range of colors, from classic single tones to multi-color gradients. We use high-quality PLA+ filaments that are durable, lightweight, and eco-friendly.
Each figure is then packaged with care — protected in recyclable materials and labeled for its series or collection.
We keep everything small-batch and local, meaning every wiggle toy is truly handcrafted through technology.
Why 3D Printed Flexi Toys Are So Unique
No molds. No factory assembly lines. Every toy you see is printed individually, which means:
- Slight differences in color or texture make each one unique.
- You’re supporting an Australian-made creative business.
- The toys are sustainable, long-lasting, and made with love.
That’s why holding a KYNS3D toy feels special — it’s more than just a fidget; it’s a piece of living art.
Final Thoughts
At KYNS3D, we believe every wiggle should bring a smile.
From concept to creation, every toy is a journey of design, detail, and delight.
If you’ve ever wanted to see how imagination turns into something you can hold, twist, and play with — that’s exactly what our 3D printing process makes possible.
